Looking to start ice climbing? Make sure you’re well-prepared with one of our guides as you learn to ice climb! We’ll cover everything from the basic gear needed to the best techniques. Nordegg’s ice climbing is nestled along the beautiful David Thompson Highway and has some of the best views in the Rockies. We’ll make sure to take you to the best spots.
Who can Ice Climb?
Anyone of reasonable fitness can climb! Ice climbing is rock climbing’s cousin and they use different techniques. If you have never done it before, a guide is essential. If you’ve never ice climbed, our “Ice Canyon Adventure” offers a quick taste in one of the prettiest ice canyons in Alberta!
What about Multi-Pitch?
If you want to tackle one of the David Thomspon Country’s classic Multi-Pitche climbs and get out of the canyons, we can take more expereienced ice climbers out to experience some of the vintage classics in the corridor. Just look for “Multi-Pitch Ice Classics.”

Where can I ice climb in Canada?
The Canadian Rockies is home to some world class rock climbing. At Girth Hitch Guiding we can take you climbing in Nordegg (Lake Abraham), David Thompson Country, Banff, Lake Louise, Canmore, & Jasper.
There is also ice climbing in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. Anywhere waterfalls freeze, you can climb!
How much does it cost to go ice climbing with a guide?
A private day of ice climbing for 1:1 guiding is $595, while group rates start at $199 per person. All of your required gear and equipment is included in this price.
What do I need to go ice climbing?
Ice climbers require both safety gear and technical gear to ice climb. Safety equipment: helmet, harness, rope, belay device. Technical gear: Crampons, mountaineering boots, ice tools.

Is ice climbing harder than rock climbing?
Ice climbing and rock climbing share similarities, but also are very different activities. Ice climbing involves the use of ice tools and crampons to climb. Both activities involve mental and physical strength to climb a vertical surface.
Can Anyone ice climb?
While ice climbing requires a reasonable level of fitness, anyone can learn to ice climb! We recommend a minimum age of 12 years to participate in our guiding services.
