Better Together Part II

I processed the loss of Andrew and Nate differently than many people. I surrounded myself with a safety net and kept my feet moving. During the days after the accident it was amazing to watch the climbing community surround Andrew and Nate’s partners with love and care. $58,932 was donated to help their loved ones move through the grieving process and get on their feet.

This display of tangible love and generosity is a constant reminder to the kinship that climbers share with one another. I have gratitude for each person who donated to this fund.

I needed to keep my feet moving, keep my momentum, stay safe and surround myself with friends. For me this meant facing places that reminded me of my sadness and staring them down. One week after Andrew and Nate passed, I asked my close friend and long time climbing partner, Phil Bietz, to attempt the route Andrew and I had been dedicated to developing for the past few weeks. It was a surreal experience to climb this new route and know that Andrew would be so pleased to see it climbed. As I ascended the start of the route I felt as though I was out of my own body, watching myself. I had to ask Phil to take many of the leads as the weight of sadness pressing down on me tried to crush me. Everything changed as I climbed the crux pitch though.

Suddenly, I experienced a release of sadness and was filled with gratitude. I thought about the way Andrew had lived his life and the part of it I was blessed to share. I was light and free to enjoy the moment with clarity. As Phil and I rappelled the route I could not help but feel a healing sense of peace. It was as though I was able to share the climb with Andrew and say goodbye. We named the route Better Together.

During my early years of development, I had added two multi pitch routes to the Yambraham area. I knew we could get a lot of climbing on the way up the southwest and have six short rappels to exit off the eastern Yambraham side. The day promised to be hot and we had a...

Bloody Coleslaw

The sight of him was unexpected. As our day wrapped up, I had an itch to bolt a line that had been on my mind for quite some time. I invited Per to join and we all headed up the route called After, to the big tree ledge. I knew that this route would be a high quality...
